summer wedding outfits: What To Wear To A Wedding As A Guest

Back when we consulted Emily Post for all things etiquette, weddings were very predictable.

The ceremony happened in a place of worship. A reception with mints, nuts, and punch followed in the church parlor or at a local club where alcohol could be served. The dress code for those weddings was also predictable.

That has all changed!

In the past few years, I’ve attended weddings in a barn, conservatory, and restaurant, on a lawn, beside the beach, and at a nature center. The dress code guidance on the wedding websites was equally eclectic: dressy casual, beach formal, cocktail attire, and creative black tie.

How do you narrow down what to wear with so many variables at play? Here are some tips for choosing the perfect outfit for your next summer wedding. SHOP THESE SUMMER WEDDING OUTFITS.

summer wedding outfits: Decoding The Wedding Dress Code

Unless otherwise stated, assume cocktail attire. That means knee-length dresses or an elegant jumpsuit. If the invitation says formal or black tie, take it up a notch with a full-length or dark shade cocktail dress. It is always better to be overdressed than underdressed when it comes to summer wedding outfits.

How to dress for less formal weddings

For less formal weddings, you can wear a maxi dress or sundress. If standing in the sand or on a lawn, choose a hem length that won’t drag on the ground. Keep cool with light, airy fabrics in a silhouette that doesn’t cling. Just make sure there aren’t too many flowy layers in case a gust of wind causes a Marilyn Monroe moment.

Looks to avoid when dressing summer wedding outfits

‘Understated elegance’ is your preferred approach. Don’t upstage the bride with an over-the-top style. Avoid looks that are too bright or too revealing. And even if the event is super casual, never wear shorts, a t-shirt, or flip-flops.

In the words of designer Tom Ford, “Dressing well is a form of good manners.” Show that you respect this special day by choosing an outfit that complements the event the wedding couple has worked so hard to create.

What Are The Best Colors To Wear To a Summer Wedding?

How to tone down your color

Too much for you? Tone it down with soft blue or green. This is the perfect time to wear florals and patterns in a midi or maxi dress. If your dress is neutral, add color and intrigue with a few gorgeous accessories.

Never wear white to a wedding—or related colors like eggshell, ivory, or cream. That palette is reserved for the bride. Think twice before choosing black—while it can be an option, save your little black dress for a more formal fall or winter wedding.

summer wedding outfits: What Type of Shoes Are Best?

Choose comfortable shoes to last through an entire wedding—including dancing!

You can’t go wrong with classic pumps at a church wedding or other indoor venue, but chic sandals are a great alternative indoors and out. A block heel or wedge is easy to stand in and will keep you from sinking into the grass. If you wear open-toe shoes, treat yourself to a pedicure before the big event!

Not sure that your shoes will last for several hours? Bring a pair of ballet flats that can be slipped on later if needed.

What Accessories Should I Wear With Summer Wedding Outfits?

Keep your accessories simple. When it comes to jewelry, a statement necklace or pair of earrings will be enough. Your handbag should be on the smaller side, no giant totes! Pack a light wrap if you need to cover your shoulders during the ceremony or ward off the evening chill. SHOP THIS LOOK.
