We all want to look our best, but sometimes it can be hard to figure out what wardrobe choices flatter us the most. If you’re over 50, you may have noticed that your body has changed, and your style needs to change with it. Inside this article, I share 5 ways to make better wardrobe choices so you can always look your best – advice from a wardrobe stylist!

Why should you care about fixing your wardrobe?

Some of us have carefully curated our wardrobes, and others have unconsciously fallen into our daily outfits – Buying bargain shopping and last-minute purchases to solve fashion emergencies.

As women age, our wardrobe choices should reflect the maturity and confidence that comes with experience.

Making better wardrobe choices as you age allows you to create a wardrobe that reflects your unique style and makes you feel beautiful, powerful, and confident.

If you don’t love your wardrobe, here are 5 ways to make better choices.

1 – Know how to dress your body shape.

Not everyone is built the same, so knowing what styles and silhouettes work best for your body type is important. Going forward, become familiar with the types of clothing that flatter your body. Ask questions like…

  • What will highlight your waist down by your hips?
  • What will accentuate your legs?
  • What’s the best neckline for your shoulders?

Stating the obvious here coming from a wardrobe stylist – but use that self-knowledge. Once you know your body shape, you can start seeking out clothing that will accentuate your best features and downplay any areas you’re not as confident about.

2 – Seek out styles that look good on you.

Just because something is in fashion doesn’t mean it will look good on you. Stick to styles that you know flatter you and make you feel confident. That way, you’ll always look put-together instead of like you’re trying too hard.

Seek out the shapes and colors that flatter you, the fabrics and styles you feel comfortable in, and the pieces that will fit into your daily life.

You may have to look around a bit to find a brand or retailer that carries what you need over time; our body size and shape will change, so work with it.

3 – Make sure your clothes are the right size.

Don’t hide inside shapeless clothes that are too big, thinking no one will notice. Learn how to flatter your new silhouette.

Clothes that are too big or too small will never look good on anyone. Get rid of anything in your closet that doesn’t fit and ensure any new clothes you buy are the right size. The right size of clothing will not only look better on you, but it will also be more comfortable to wear.

Don’t let months, or even years of your life, go before prioritizing your appearance.

4 – Emphasize your best features.

Quick. What are your three best features?

I know you can tell me what you don’t like about your body, and you think that’s the first thing everyone notices.

We all have things we like about our appearance and things we don’t like as much.

Ask a friend if you need help or get on a call with me, and I’ll do it. Book your free style consultation here.

When choosing what to wear, make sure to emphasize the features you like the most and downplay the ones you don’t.

For example, if you have great legs, choose a skirt or dress that shows them off. If you don’t love your arms, opt for a top with long sleeves or a cardigan.

5 – Choose quality

As you get better at making clothing choices. You’ll find that you are not chasing trends and buying on impulse. You’ll wear your clothes longer and enjoy them more.

It’s better to have a small number of well-made, high-quality pieces in your wardrobe than a closet full of cheap clothes that fall apart after one season.

When shopping for new clothes, focus on finding pieces that will last for years instead of trendy items that will go out of style next season. You’ll spend less in the long run and always look your best.

Invest in quality. I promise it will save you time and money.
